Cake Smash Session
Celebrate your little ones first birthday with a cake smash session. These sessions can be done in my studio or outdoors. Indoors gives you better options for a backdrop and decorations for your theme you choose. They can be done several weeks before their first birthday to incorporate onto party invitations, on their birthday, or after. These sessions include some photos before the cake smash, photos of cake "demolition". Cake is not included in the session. I recommend parents get a professional cake. The results are much better. Feel free to contact your local bakery for you cake smash. Please feel free to bring special outfits or anything you would like in the photos.
Colors: Pink, white, yellow, light baby blue, and light green photograph well, and match most backdrops. Avoid chocolate, red and blue. They do not look good wet and are tough to clean.
Cake: Go with whipped or butter cream frosting so it's easy to dig into. AVOID Fondant- It's tough to break and can be a choking hazard. Sprinkles, absolutely, if you can get them on your cake without having to modify your design/theme. Make sure the cake is at room temperature prior to photo session. A cold or chilled cake is difficult for the baby to smash.
Practice: Remember the baby is just 1 year old, and if often shy of exploring new texture, shape or taste. Especially when surrounded by adults making noises and clapping to egg them on. I suggest parents practice at home, before the session, with a cupcake. Icing on top, preferably the same colors and similar environment i.e. everyone sits on the floor. Not a fool proof tip, but is has worked for me in the past.
Plan a Theme: Plan a theme around a favorite book or character. well known characters means known colors making the cake design easier, and available accessories to purchase to add to the set up.
Backdrop: I use a seamless paper that I roll out so the baby can sit on it too. This also makes for easy clean up.
